# IMMEDIATE TEST: DO I WEIGH TOO MUCH?

Check your BMI  with  BMI Calculator! The body mass index reveals whether your weight is okay in comparison to body size.

The body mass index (BMI) is an indicator of body weight in relation to the body size. The BMI tells you whether you are within the normal health range, or whether you are too fat or too thin. Thus, the BMI is the basis for every figure check and can indicate whether you should lose weight. The BMI is calculated by dividing the actual weight by the body size in meters to the square.

EXPERT ASSESSMENT

Achim Sam, nutritionist and best-selling author, on the BMI: You can easily calculate your personal BMI using our BMI calculator. The calculated value gives information about the weight. In doing so, the Body Mass Index subdivides between three main categories:

1.A BMI value under 19 indicates underweight,

2.A value from 19 to 25 indicates a normal and healthy BMI value.

3.Values above 25 point to overweight; from 30 onwards, according to the BMI scale of obesity – in this case, medical advice should be sought.

ORIGIN AND MEANING OF THE BMI

The calculation of the BMI was then developed in 1832 by the mathematician Adolphe Quetelet and only gained popularity with the introduction of the American insurance system in order to take into account the risks of overweight in the premiums of the insurance contributions. Today, the body mass index is a frequently used criterion for estimating weight and identifying possible overweight. The BMI is often used in connection with diet and nutritional issues – but also in the professional context. For example, in some federal states, civil service in the public service is being made by the body mass index. The BMI is thus used in many areas and is considered a widely used measure for weight and body size.

CURRENT BMI DATA OF MANKIND!

The New England Journal of Medizine published terrifying figures in June 2017:

1.More than two billion people around the world have a BMI over 25 and are thus officially overweight.

2.In more than 70 countries, the share of those who have a BMI of more than 30 and are considered “obese” has doubled within the last 25 years. At the top: Egypt with 35 per cent of the population – in Germany, 23 per cent of women are affected and just under a fifth of men.

3.Too much body mass make the researchers worldwide per year responsible for four million premature deaths. To this end, overweight is at least a trigger for more than a dozen types of cancer – including intestinal, liver and breast cancer.

4.The least risk of dying prematurely is worldwide with people with a BMI between 20 and 25.

The study researchers are talking about the hard figures of a “disturbing global health crisis”.

NOTE ON THE BMI COMPUTER

However, it should be noted that the BMI is a relative index. This means that important variables such as stature, sex, and muscle mass are not considered. Thus, for example, a bodybuilder with a very high muscle mass can calculate for himself a wrongly high BMI value. The body mass index should, therefore, be considered as a guideline and should be viewed in relation to physique, sports activities, and gender. In the last few years, the stomach circumference has become established as a further unit of measurement – in addition to the BMI. It is the even more critical measure of your risk of suffering cardiovascular disease in the future.

Officially, today, regardless of age and body constitution,

•For men: increased risk with a waist circumference of 94 to 101, significantly increased from 102 centimeters;

•For women: increased risk between 80 and 87, significantly increased from 88 centimeters.

ALTERNATIVES TO THE BMI CALCULATOR

•One of the best known is the Waist-to-Height-Ratio, in which the waist circumference is divided by the body size. The stomach circumference should be measured always in the morning with sober stomach and in a straight, standing posture (measuring tape just over the belly button close up, horizontally pull around the body, but it must not cut!).
And these are the guideline values: Up to 40-year-old: under 0,40 underweight • 0,40-0,50 normal weight • 0,51-0,56 overweight •> 0,57 obesity. Between 40 and 50 years: 0.01 points are added to each additional year.

•In the Broca index, the normal weight is displayed as a body size minus 100. For a woman weighing 65 kilos, she would be considered normal. If the calculated weight is heavily under its own weight, it can be assumed that there is an overweight (eg 75 kg at 1.65 m). If you take 10% of the normal weight according to the Broca index for a man or 20% for a woman, you would get the ideal weight. Similar to the BMI, the Broca index has the disadvantage that the body composition is not taken into account.
The perfect measure to predict whether a certain body weight or a certain body shape is harmful to health has not yet existed. The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to use the BMI because only two values are needed for the calculation, which is useful when collecting large amounts of data. In addition, the BMI is a suitable measure to quickly and easily estimate the overall body composition, find again experts from the German Institute for Nutrition Research.
